Hugh Pritchard (1831-1899) , Ty Gwyn, Llanddaniel Fab
« on: Wednesday 03 February 16 14:37 GMT (UK) »
I'm wondering if anyone has any information regarding my ancestor(s)

I believe Hugh was born in Liverpool and was a baker, and built Ty Gywn outside Llanddaniel Fab, married Mary Hughes (1835-) from Newborough.
They had daughters Ellen (1862), Mary (1864), Maggie (1866), Laura (1868) and 2 sons Hugh (1870-) and Rowland J (1874-1896).

Hugh (1870-) married a Mary E Evans (1874) from Llanddona who died in childbirth after giving him 2 daughters Mary (Minnie) 1902 and Elizabeth 1903. He then married her elder sister Kate (1866) but had no further children. My ancestor was Elizabeth (1859), a sister of Mary E and Kate with another sister Martha and a brother John.

Keen to find out about Hugh Snr before he went to Anglesey and get a link back to Llanddona.

Cheers :)

Hi Andy,
Welcome to RootsChat.
Is this correct?
Hugh (1870-) married a Mary E Evans (1874) from Llanddona ...
From what I've found it seems that Mary Ellen's surname is Williams?

A Mary Pritchard's birth was registered as 9 Jul 1901 at Llanddaniel-fab, the daughter of Hugh Pritchard and Mary Ellen Williams and an Elizabeth Pritchard was registered 18 Feb 1903 with the same details.

Mary Ellen Williams married Hugh Pritchard in a civil ceremony at Bangor (FreeBMD Dec 1900 11b 903) and Catherine Williams married Hugh Pritchard, again in a civil ceremony at Bangor in 1911 (Mar 11b 536).

If I'm correct her birth was registered as 2 May 1872 at Llanddona, the daughter of Owen Williams and Elizabeth (nee) Williams.
Other children of the same parents, all born Llanddona, were:
Catherine - 1 Apr 1866; Martha - 31 Oct 1878; Ann - 11 Feb 1864; Elizabeth - 9 Apr 1859; Hannah - 18 Jan 1876; Hugh - 8 Jun 1861; John - 13 Jan 1857; Owen - 21 Jul 1854; Robert - 7 Jul 1869.

There was a marriage 11 Nov 1851 at Llanddona Church between Owen Williams, full age, miller of Llanddona Mill, son of Owen Williams, miller and Elizabeth Williams, minor, of Llanddona Mill, dau. of Hugh Williams, farmer.

I can't help with the birth in Liverpool of Hugh Pritchard (Snr).

Hi dragon, thanks ! I had found the Williams, living at "Bryn dona" but when I asked my mum she said no their surname was Evans. Not sure where she got that from apart from the relative still living at Ty Gwyn.

(I had no luck with Evans at all.)

seems a little odd that they (Hugh and Mary then Catherine) would choose a civil ceremony ?

Hello Andy,

Welcome to Rootschat.

Hugh's marriage was on 23 May 1860 at Llanddaniel Fab Church - Hugh Pritchard, Farmer Ty Gwyn, son of Hugh Pritchard, married Mary Hughes, Carregddyfnallt, daughter of Rowland Hughes, Farmer.

The children's birth dates are -
Ellin 7/4/1861; Mary Jane 23/11/1863; Laura 21/2/1868; Rowland John 7/11/1873 (these all shown as Pritchard)
Hugh 21/3/1870; Margaret  4/11/1865 (shown as Prichard)

There were 2 other children who died in infancy - Emma Pritchard 9/3/1872 - 7/7/1872 and Hugh Prichard 2/11/1862 - 30/12/1862

Hugh's wife Mary died on 27/9/1874 age 39.

I can see the family "Pritchard" in 1881 and in 1871 as "Prichard" - do you have the census details?
Currently struggling to see them in 1861 after their 1860 marriage.

Rowland Hughes and family are at Carregddyfnallt in the 1851 census.

Hope these details help

Alan

Hi,

Some more details -

I have found in the 1851 census Hugh Prichard from Amlwch, age 65 (living in the parish of Llangeinwen) living with his son Hugh 20 (born Liverpool) and daughter Margaret age 28 (also born Liverpool). I am fairly certain this is the family you are looking for as I have the memorial inscriptions booklet from Gwynedd FHS and there is a grave in Dwyran Chapel (plot 312) which says

Sacred to the memory of Hugh Pritchard Bryntirion in this parish who died Dec 5th 1862 age 77. Also of Rowland John youngest son of Hugh and Mary Pritchard who died August 22 1896 age 22 years. Also of Mary wife of Hugh Pritchard Ty Gwyn, Llanddaniel who died Sept 27th 1874 age 40. Also of the above named Hugh Pritchard born March 27th 1831 died March 25th 1899. In memory of Hugh son of Hugh and Mary Pritchard Ty Gwyn in the parish of Llanddaniel-fab who died Dec 30th 1862 age 2 months. Also Emma daughter of above named , she died 6 July 1872 age 4 months.

"Fy nyddiau sydd fel cyagod yn/cilio, a minnau fel glaswelltyn a wywais" . PS.CII.II

I don't speak Welsh to be able to translate the inscription but I am sure others will be able to do so.

I am sure this will give you something more to build on, and will see if I can find Hugh Prichard in Amlwch.

Alan

You're on fire Alan ! :D

I kept seeing Pritchards from Amlwch with similar details / names but discounted it as I was told Hugh the baker was from Liverpool.

Thanks for you good work......so far !

Hi Andy,

Looking again at Mary E. Evans (1874) from Llanddona are you convinced that Evans is correct? Do you have evidence from your ancestor Elizabeth (1859)? Was she married with maiden name Evans, and who did she marry?

That was a bum steer from my mum, no def. Williams.

They lived in Bryn dona in llanddona, it is the house that was associated with the mill (now demolished), and ties in with the millers. I think the confusion came about because youngest daughter Martha married a Thomas Evans and they ended up living at Bryn dona with the mother when widowed (Elizabeth)
