Is the grinning chap in the background pointing a pistol at the two officers in the foreground?

Here's a closer look. It appears to be an automatic pistol, possibly a Luger, presumably a captured weapon.

EDIT - yes I think it is a Luger. It's just possible to discern the toggle in the locked position.

Scary stuff with the gun.

The only Medal card I can find is for A.S.C 2 Res Pk -  Rank Dir? maybe then T/Cpl.  Any idea what the uniform looks like for that? Thanks

Those two in the foreground of the photo are commissioned officers. The medal card is for Corporal Sydney A Sherriff who was not a commissioned officer. So if it's the right medal card, he is not one of the two in the picture.
