Andrew and Colin McQUARRIE, born 1826 and 1828 Edinburgh respectively
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 14:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS SAME MESSAGE HAS BEEN POSTED ON THE NZ BOARD

These two brothers, born to Allan McQuarrie (1802-1846) and Johan McQuarrie (nee Stewart 1804-1856), in Edinburgh, Scotland, were both transported:

(1):   Andrew McQUARRIE arrived Auckland, NZ, 25/11/1842 aboard the "St. George" to complete a 7 year sentence as a "Free Immigrant" (similar to an "Exile"):

(2):   Colin McQUARRIE arrived Port Phillip, Williamstown, 25/01/1848 aboard the "Marion" to complete a 10 year sentence  as an "Exile".....initially employed by Mr. Lang of Melbourne as a Butcher for 12 months at £20 p.a.

I have fuller details of their family background from a Public Tree, but nothing has been retrieved for either person after their transportation, by myself or the Tree "Owner" who I have been in contact with.   I have tried the TROVE website in Australia and Papers Past in NZ to no avail sadly.

Can anyone help please?

Sorry Neil....... but his disembarkation was Williamstown, Port Phillip......see below

http://prov.vic.gov.au/search_results?searchid=24&format=freetext&FamilyName=McQUARRIE&GivenName=&Ship=&Month=0&Monthto=0&Year=0&Yearto=0&SearchSortField1=&SearchSortField2=&SearchRecords=50&x=56&y=16

For some unknown reason this record quotes his age as "0" ???

And also Keith M. Clarke's "Convicts of the Port Phillip District" substantiates this PROV reference.

The ships record has it as landing at Van Diemans land however it may have only called there and then gone on to disembark the 299 at Williamstown. His age was given as 15 years. Convicted for Housebreaking.

Not much else however?

For some unknown reason this record quotes his age as "0" ???

The TNA (copy of daily sick list) - Ref: ADM 101/49/10/3 has him as 20yrs.
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10536928

Both the Marion passenger & disposal lists have his age as 18yrs.

Do you have copies of these three documents?

Merlin,

Thank you for your message.

I think my research on both brothers has hit that infamous "brick wall" ::)    The newspapers, TROVE and Papers Past, have been unproductive, as have those indexes that are available to me in the UK.    I do not subscribe at the uppermost level to A........y and therefore am unable to research the indigenous Australian/New Zealand records.

Incidentally, there was a third brother, Allan, who was transported to Western Australia, but he had not been at Parkhurst Prison and thus outside my interest.

Take care,

BAC3

This may seem obvious but have you researched them with the name MACQUARIE? I used it unsuccessfully in searching but did not check NZ records. One has to be careful with that name as it also belongs to one of Australia's or NSW to be more correct, leading early Governors. Lachlan MACQUARIE. Which in it's true Scottish name is McQUARRIE.

I am the GGGrandaughter of Alan McQuarrie and have also had no luck tracing the lives of his two older brothers . Alan never re offended and went on to live a good life and has many descendants in  Western Australia .
Good luck with your Parkhurst project .
