York Mothers

In searching the Free Family site mothers are never shown for baptisms while most Counties have both mothers and fathers given.  Does this mean the Parish registers do not have them?

What period are looking at?  Early parish registers do not always show the mother's name.  However, if you are really lucky, and especially in Yorkshire, at the end of the 18th century you may find parents and grandparents listed - Dade registers.  BUT you have to look at the parish registers themselves - sites such as Family Search do not always give the full register entries.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks BB. I am in Australia looking at 1600's and 1700's.

How would you suggest I look at registers to get an idea of who may be likely suspects before I start paying a fortune to get prints of numerous possibilities?

Family search with mothers names does at least reduce the numbers of candidates.

I suppose I am on a fishing expedition here and also am unsure about the different regions of Yorkshire and where the various counties lie.  Up until now I have been involved with Lincolnshire but now find myself shifting to Yorkshire!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you have the surnames, and an approximate location within Yorkshire.

Perhaps a new thread, citing the information you are seeking, on the appropriate Riding forum (if you need to locate the Riding then I suggest you look at Genuki - very comprehensive regarding Yorkshire).  You may already know this  ;D ;D

Ancestry and FindMyPast between them cover most Yorkshire parishes - FindMyPast have the bishop's transcripts for the diocese of York.

Hope this helps  :)
