Wickhams in Wadhurst/Ticehurst
« on: Friday 12 February 16 06:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am resurrecting an old topic as I want to see if a brickwall may be solveable with some circumstantial evidence.
I can find no trace of a baptism for ggg grandfather Jesse Wickham of Wadhurst, born around 1811 or 1812. In an old thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=649052.0 a couple of suggestions were made as to possible parents but there is no evidence that I have found to suggest these are in fact his parents.
Recently I found a copy of Jesse's marriage entry in the Sussex parish registers. If he had married a couple of years later, the father's name would have been recorded but as it was, one of the witnesses was a Hannah Wickham.
There is a James Wickham of Wadhurst who married Hannah Hollands in 1801. Five children are recorded in parish registers, but no Jesse. I wonder if Jesse may be a child of this pair, or some other close relative. Is there any other possible means to find a relationship between Jesse Wickham and Hannah Wickham? Any help or ideas welcome.

I wonder if he could actually be a James.  There is one baptised in Maresfield in 1815 but noted as born in 1811.  Son of William and Hannah.  There is also a Levi baptised in 1824 but that may be a later Wm and Hannah as there are two marriages.  One to Hannah Earl in 1799 and another to Hannah Frances Evans in 1822.
Maresfield is not far from Wadhurst.  15 miles maybe.
James and Hannah have a daughter Sarah baptised in Wadhurst in 1823.
Probably clutching at straws here!
Have you looked at non conformist records?

Haven't looked at non-conformist - it is a thought, though married in the C of E. There seems to be a few Jesses born in Wadhurst and Ticehurst in the early 1800s, but all to non-Wickham families!

In the Ticehurst parish Elizabeth WICKHAM had a bastard child around late 1811, there is a warrant to apprehend Robert JONES from Beneden 1811 Apr 6 as the expectant father. The notes suggest that Elizabeth went on to marry Jesse MARTIN 14 Dec 1813 in Ticehurst. Some nice ideas that could be followed up there, my access to SFHG doesn't seem to work, must ask for a new password, otherwise I would do it myself!

Jesse WICKHAM'S wife Harriet STAPELY also had a bastard son, Charles Harris baptised 28 April 1833. Father is named as James WATERHOUSE.

Can't find any bastard children for Elizabeth Wickham in the parish registers for 1811/12...

I can't remember when the legal requirement to marry in a C of E church changed.  It might be worth checking as the non conformist route might help.

Have had a brief look. There are some Calvinist Wickhams in Wadhurst who had a daughter in 1812, but no luck thus far in finding Jesse.

James Martin Wickham baptised 14 Nov 1813 Ticehurst - mother Elizabeth, no father mentioned. I imagine the middle name of Martin refers to her new man Jesse Martin whom she married a month later.
Could James be your Jesse?
