Francis Reed arrived NSW 7th February 1836, what happened next?
« on: Thursday 18 February 16 10:57 GMT (UK) »
Francis Reed, 55, butcher, arrived in NSW as a convict, on the ship Susan on 7th February 1836. He left behind a wife and children in Bristol. I have all the details of his life up to him arriving in Australia and his convict records. I live in the UK.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what happened to him?

I don't think a certificate will tell you much but this fellow died at Port Macquarie NSW in 1874. No parents listed a good sign of a possible convict.

Frances REED REF # 7462/1874     AGE 90 YEARS There are two REF numbers also
998/1874 V1874998 44B

Thank you for the information, it is one to look at as the age fits quite well :)

December 1837 Convict Muster

Francis REED, aged 55, per Susan 1836, assigned to Alexander BERRY in the Illawarra.

Alexander BERRY : http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/berry-alexander-1773

From the Biographical Database of Australia, may I mention that there's a Frances REED born about 1784 who died Port Macquarie 1874 who likely arrived on the Guildford in 1822.

So you believe the fellow down at Berry may be a likely JM. I wondered about the I/E difference and thought later about the feminine/masculine names.

Back to do do some more looking :-\

Thank you both for your continued input, it is appreciated.

We like to have this idea that he managed to have a little bit of  life in Australia but the truth is probably a lot different.

Francis had been married three times and had left behind numerous children, a lot were adults when he was sent to Australia. His third wife was pregnant with his last child so he never met him :(

Once again thank you for your help :)

I can find no further reference to Francis REED/REID/READ in anything I have gone over. However contained in the Papers of The Berry Family lodged at the MITCHELL Library are the records of all the convicts assigned to Alexander BERRY and his interests at Shoalhaven.
See:
http://acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/_transcript/2007/D00007/berry1.pdf

I don't know where else to look, your man seems to have disappeared, possibly in an insurrection at Coolangatta Shoalhaven around 1838.?
