Looking for a baptism George Burden
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 08:40 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone find a baptism for me please.
I am looking for George Burden born c.1792. He is to be found living in Wareham.  On census he puts place of birth as 1851 Wargate and  in 1861 Wareham. He is married to Maria Orchard whose baptism I have found in Wareham but I cannot find anything for George.
Many thanks

Hi Norma
Thanks for that.
It is the only baptism that I had found around the right date.
I have not dismissed it completely as I cannot find this George dying young or marrying anyone else.
What worries me is Cornelius and Ann were both buried in Melcombe -Horsey so it's not as if they moved to Wareham when George was a child so why does he put Wareham as birth place? I have looked at places close by like East Stoke but nothing there

1811 in Portsea. In the early 1800's there was a lot of trade between Wareham and Portsmouth particularly in the brewing industry. I have been wondering if George may not have been from Dorset at all

Portsea is some distance away from Wareham, but it does seem to be the only marriage that fits the time frame. They would both be underage in 1811, maybe they went a long way from home and pretended to be over 21, because one or both sets of parents might object to the marriage.

But even so, Portsea seems extreme, I'm sure they could have got away with an underage marriage in Poole or Swanage.

Maria was pregnant when they got married so maybe that was the reason they married out of Wareham. I have one set of grandparents from Wareham who got married in Southampton and another pair who went to Netherby in each case the bride was pregnant. Perhaps it was really frowned upon in the town but they all put plenty of miles between them and home!!!
