1784 baptism St Mary Magdalene Woolwich - Sary BROOKS
« on: Saturday 27 February 16 00:31 GMT (UK) »
I found a baptism on FreeReg for a Sary BROOKS, father George, mother Sarah, on 25 April 1784 at St Mary Magdalene Woolwich.

Does anyone have access to the original record? I'm hoping that "Sary" is a mistranscription for "Sarah" :-)

Thanks,
Jan

Hi

The baptism does say SARY born April 11th , bpt. April 25

The baptism directly below it is of a Sarah Wilson and they are written by the same hand, definitely not a mistranscription.

Many thanks, Claire. Such an unusual name - I've never come across it before.

I would like to think of Sary as another version of Sarah, her Mum.  Would certainly have prevented confusion in the home, and for the rest of their family!  Can often be confusing when chn have the same Christian name as a parent, and she may well have finished up being nicknamed Sary anyway!

For what it's worth?? I think it's very pretty! 😄👍

I agree with Jeanne. Almost certainly a variation of Sarah. Have you found her in other records, and is she always Sary, or Sarah?

I think you're right too, Jeanne :-)

The Sarah Brooks I'm looking for was born in Woolwich, according to various records, anywhere from 1777 (unlikely) to 1794. She married Thomas Hall in 1805 in St Nicholas Plumstead. None of the records give her parents' names, and she went to Australia in 1816 so doesn't appear in census records in England. In the 1828 NSW census she is aged 34 so born 1794. She is always Sarah in all other records.

A quick google search tells me it is a Hebrew name meaning princess or lady; comes into English as Sarah (Wikipedia).

Thanks, pinefamily. I should have thought of Google ...
Just realised that the age on the 1828 census must be wrong, otherwise she married Thomas Hall when she was 11.

Just a thought - would a 1787 baptism have the father's occupation?
