Turpins of Finchingfield
« on: Saturday 27 February 16 21:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm having trouble deciphering the surname of the betrothed, Ann. of my great- great- great- grandfather, George Turpin. The Banns were published at St John the Baptist in 1809, ERO D/P 14/1/5 Image 32. Unfortunately for George his Mum popped up and forbade them on the grounds that he was under age. There appears to be no record of a subsequent marriage, although they started producing offspring in 1810. Surely the vicar would have known if they were not married and any children would have been described as 'base born' ?

Could be Hall, there is a Mary Ann Hall living with the family in 1851 census. The census says Ann was born c1779 in Stock, but I couldn't find an appropriate baptism.

I'm a bit surprised that a woman from Stock would pitch up in Finchingfield, although nothing's impossible of course. Presumably 'of this parish' means where she lived at the time rather than her birthplace? I see she was 10 years older than George - perhaps that was what mother didn't like...
