Tracing Loftus family in US
« on: Wednesday 02 March 16 21:32 GMT (UK) »
I have records of Michael Loftus and his son Joe Loftus arriving in Ellis Island on 13th November 1893. Can anyone help me find out where they went after that?

I've found them on outgoing passenger lists from Southampton to New York but I can't access the incoming passenger lists. I'm hoping they will have some more information.

Name: Michl Loftus
Gender: Male
Age: 40
Birth Date: abt 1853 (actually 5 Aug 1853)
Departure Date: 4 Nov 1893
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Destination Port: New York, USA
Ship Name   : Berlin
Master: Fredrick Watkins

Same details for his son other than personals:
Name: Joe Loftus
Gender: Male
Age: 11
Birth Date: abt 1882

They were both born in Ireland, specifically the Kilmoremoy, Mayo area. Michael's parents were Dominick Loftus and Mary Hanahue and they moved from Mayo with the rest of the family to settle in the Leeds, Yorkshire area.

Any information about the pair would be helpful. Thanks.

The 1893 passenger list says that Michael was a farmer, they were US citizens, and they were going to Illinois.

If you can get an exact date of birth, particular for Joe, and any middle name, that could be helpful.

Thanks Shelly!

Part of me thinks Joe could be a Joseph as that name was very common compared to Joe.

I wish I could but the baptism records for 1882 just aren't there for the area he's from. I have no idea who the wife/mother is either. I can't find them in any parish records or English census as of yet.

I have the baptism record for Michael though:
Name: Michl Loftus
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 5 Aug 1853
Baptism Date: 28 Aug 1853
Baptism Age: 0
Baptism Place: Kilmoremoy, Mayo and Sligo, Ireland
Diocese: Killala

The passenger records are freely available at http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/
What I don't see is any indication that this Michael is your man. The passenger list gives no indication of where in Ireland he came from (typical for this time).

This looks like Michael/Joseph who arrived in 1893 heading to Illinois, potentially - but I think this is a different family from Sligo, as evidenced by death records for some of these children - the other family members seem to have come across in dribs and drabs over a few years:
one census:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MK8V-LZ8
death for Michael b. Oct 1853 Sligo, different parents to yours:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N34C-C3V

When did his parents move across to England? Is it possible Michael died before the rest of the family moved? (You would have to check the local records, which may not be possible online, for any family burials).

Unsure that you have the correct Baptism ,as there are four various Michl Loftus baptisms all with images on FMPast, for area of Ballina,Killmore Moy, Kilmore Moy,in the Killala diocese, for your time frame 1853.              There is also link for National Library of Ireland on Loftus baptism pages.
Images have different parents, mostly baptised in the Ballina area.

Ballina is Co Mayo,on the river Moy which runs out to the sea 7 miles up the estuary close to Killala which is Co Sligo,as know this area well.so would suggest that Killala parish is in both counties.
Hope this helps Brionne.
