« on: Thursday 03 March 16 00:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I am just wondering if anyone has connections or knowledge of the Smalley family from Leverington, Cambridge UK. I am an ancestor and would like out more about my ancestral history and find relatives from the area.

If you haven't already done so, a good way to make surname connections with other members is to enter your surname interests in the Surname Interests Table (SIT), and to check there whether others are researching these names.

This can be found at http://surname.rootschat.com/ , there is a link to it under "Your Tools" at the bottom of each Rootschat page.

The more people who enter their surnames, the more chance there will be of making a connection!

If you are looking for information about specific family members, post their names (provided they are deceased), along with what you already know about them, and people here will gladly try to help you. ;)

Anyone else finding this difficult, I am having no luck, I'm finding it difficult to navigate the Surnames Interest Page, it would be better if the moderators could make the toolbar more illuminated, so that it's much more user friendly.

Hi

Welcome to rootschat.

Sorry you are finding the SIT search difficult, I think that this is the page you are after.
http://surname.rootschat.com/sit-surnames.php?letter1=S&letter2=6&surname=SMALLEY#top_tv

I see that you also want to find out about your Smalley ancestral history. Maybe if you give us some information as to what you are looking for to save us giving you details you already have.  Rootschatters are volunteers and are happy to try and help.

Rosie

My Great Great Grandfather's name was Thomas Henry Smalley and he was born at sea on 1 September 1851 on the way to the Ballarat Goldfields, Australia. I have a family tree that goes back to the Smalley Family- James Smalley, born in Leverington Cambridge England in 1805. I also have a relative by the name of Elizabeth McGrath who was a   seamstress from Tipperary Ireland. I am looking to know what vocations the Smalleys and family used to have and learn a bit about their lives in Cambridge.

Regards

Jasmin Sara

Is this your family living in Leverington, Cambridgeshire in 1851

Jas   Smalley 46 occ Labourer   Born Newton, Cambridgeshire
Martha age 40 bn Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire
Mary Ann   - dtr - age 18   bn Newton
Harriet -dtr -age 4 bn Leverington
Elizth -dtr age 1 bn Leverington

The 1841 has them with children Mary 6, Harriett 2 and Sarah 2 months

It looks as though Harriett was buried at Leverington age 4 in 1842 (freereg)

That doesn't really make sense because all of their offspring were women meaning the line would have been lost in name from then on, unless they had an illegitimate child and were named after the mother - which knowing my own temperament would make sense as we are fairly independent women in our family and don't prioritize things like hetero normative societies. So perhaps we were just more independent and progressive than most.

I simply wouldn't of existed unless William Smalley was real, so I exist therefore there must be missing pieces to this puzzle.

Unless William Smalley was the product of a sole parent.
