Huts in Tealing
« on: Wednesday 09 March 16 09:58 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandfather died age 74, in December 1947 in Stracathro Hospital his usual address was given as 255 Hut, Site 6, Tealing. I know there was a military camp there in WW11 so I'm presuming after the war the huts were given over to civilian use. Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks Jen

Hello Jen,
Looks like the ex-Raf huts at Tealing may have been used as accomodation. Maybe because of the housing shortage at the end of WW11. See 1954 on this link:
               www.tealingvillage.org/timeline.html
     Information about RAF Tealing here:
               www.secretscotland.org.uk/index.php/Secrets/RAFTealing
Hope this helps with your query.
               Regards,     Dod.

Hi Dod,
Thanks for the links - I had tried Canmore but they showed only a map alas no pictures so I'm well chuffed to see structures with the Sidlaw hills in the background from links at the SecretScotland site! Makes me feel sad that he was living in a hut in his mid 70s. The RAF appeared to use mainly Nissan huts which must have been freezing cold in the winter what a place to spend your last years.

Hi Monica,
Many thanks for the link I had no idea so many of these buildings were still standing albeit in poor repair. That timeline of Tealing that Dod posted is interesting...it seems it's all about the church and then it's all about road safety. I'm always looking to weave a bit of the history of the kirk into my family history but 'my great Granddad lived in a hut in the same village where the Rev John Glas of the 'Kale Kirk' preached' is definitely stretching it a bit!
Jen

Edit:
Just adding this snippet from the Tealing website contributed by Miss Mabel McLean:
"Because of Dad's death in 1949, we moved to the Huts (at the aerodrome).  In 1954, we got a low door, no stairs, home in Inveraldie.  Mother marvelled at the wonder of electricity and moved from room to room exclaiming that she would no longer have the dirty, smelly, tilly lamp globes to clean!"
