HUGHES and TOWEL of Kilmore, Armagh
« on: Monday 14 March 16 12:45 GMT (UK) »
I'm having great fun at the moment delving into the Irish Catholic Church records, free for the month of March on Ancestry!  I have found what I think could be my brick wall, Sarah Hughes, daughter of James Hughes and Eliza Jowel, baptised on 9 September 1849.  her sister Elizabeth was baptised 28 November 1850 in the same parish.  I have never heard the surname Jowel, can anyone give me any information on this at all?  The handwriting on the record is quite clear and legible. (Not sure if I can upload due to copyright?) Any advice or leads would be brilliant!
AMEND:  Think surname is TOWEL not JOWEL (see below)
KELLY - Antrim
HUGHES - Armagh
LEYDEN - Ahamlish, Sligo/Down/Belfast
MAGUIRE/MCGUIRE - Ardglass, Co. Down
HUGGARD - Wexford/Kerry
O'REILLY - Dublin/Cavan
BARNES - Dublin
HAZELTON - NI
MCCAMBRIDGE - Antrim

These images are always free on NLI site so no copyright issue, they are just not searchable by name.

John Towel was in Money, Kilmore per Griffiths Valuation.  You might check the records for his children.

I read the name as Toal on the link Sinann posted.

Here is a screenshot of Sarah's sister, Elizabeth's baptism - image is clearer than that of Sarah's.  I am definitely reading this as Jowel - any suggestions welcome!

Can you give a link to the page from the NLI registers so that we can see the whole page to get a better idea of handwriting?

The Tithe Applotment search gives one Jowel, one Towel. The transcriptions on that can be fairly dodgy at times.
Irish Times Ancestors has no result for Jowel this for Towel
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=
The 1901 and 1911 don't give a result for Jowel, there are a few Towel.

I wonder if this was a case of 'how they pronounced it'

This is the link to the whole page with Sarah's sister Elizabeth's baptism (lower half of left hand side)

Thanks for the suggestion of Towel, Sinann - I will have a look at those!
Thanks all for help so far - I am determined to crack this one!

I think it's Towel- see John Toal on the page opposite.
