1911 India Census
« on: Tuesday 05 April 16 17:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know if there was a census in India in 1911 which is online? I am trying to trace a William Dillon who was serving with the Connaught Rangers in India at this date.

Thanks

John

I've found soldiers in India on 1911 census, available online on subscription sites.

The 1911 Census was the first one to have a full enumeration carried out of the British Army serving overseas, including details of wives and families.

Hi nanny jan,

Were any of the soldiers you found in 1911 Census in India in the Connaught Rangers. If so could you give me a name so I can track the records of the whole regiment in the census please.

Is this the Willam Dillon no 10052 in your other topic ? I have looked at the fragments of service records on the subscription sites and I'm not sure he was in India in 1911. There is a page in one of the files giving dates and locations :

( location missing ) 4-10-10 to 18-9-12
letters missing followed by "ia" 19-9-12 to 27-8-14
France 28-8-14 to 26-4-15

The above suggests he didn't arrive in India until 1912. I also found a list of all the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers who were in India in 1911 on the 1914-1918 website :
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=146086 - I can't see a William Dillon there.

If no one else comes forward with anything useful it might be worth posting on the 1914-1918 forum to see if they can help.
