Evacuation from Malta 1943
« on: Friday 08 April 16 17:09 BST (UK) »
My father was in the Royal Irish Fusiliers based in Malta 1937, my brother and I were born there (1938 and 1940)  We were flown from Malta to Gibraltar in 1943 then took a ship Athlone Castle to Liverpool.

Please can anyone confirm the plane that flew us to Gibraltar was a Liberator.

Have you any more details, please?

How many passengers were on board the aircraft, do you know?

Sorry, I do not know.  Possibly 12.  I am having trouble seeing the ships passenger list.  I will keep trying.  Names are bracketed together with Malta written in the next margin.  The Athlone Castle's departure port was Bombay, India

My father is not mentioned on the ships passenger list so whether he was with other service men is another mystery.

Have a look at www.convoyweb  which may give you numbers of passengers and may give whether they were troops, prisoners or civilians.

Many thanks, I will do that straight away.  Are you from Newcastle?  Just thought because of your name Scouseboy.  My mother's family were from Newcastle

I am from Liverpool.

I wonder if the Athlone Castle  was being used as a Hospital Ship.

I wonder if you are right.  My father was sent to a mental hospital when we got to the uk but again I was too young to take much notice.  Families didn't talk about 'things like that'  I was told he had his tonsils out.  We must have had a really bad time in Malta judging by all the history I am reading about it.

I tried the www convoyweb site but they wanted to know what my interest was and whether I was connected to the shipping lines etc  so I declined as I felt I was in the wrong place.
