Adam Neal
« on: Monday 11 April 16 10:54 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

I have an Adam Neal, surname sometimes spelt as Niel, Neale, etc, born 1783/5 in Scotland.

I think Adam enlisted into the Army at Saint Enoch, Glasgow, Scotland in 1805 (Lanarkshire)? There is a possibility he may have been in the Napoleonic Wars (1805 - 1815)?

I think Adam may have married at Framlingham, Suffolk, in 1811 (as Adam John Neal) a Sophia Collins (she may have been baptised at Framilingham in 1787).

Adam and Sophia later moved to Sunderland, Durham and had four children - James, Matthew, Robert and Sophia. Adam Neal died in 1852 at Sunderland.

Any help with his possible military past or parents much appreciated! :)

FindMyPast has an army discharge record for Adam Neal born St Enoch who served in the 28th Lt Dragoons 1880-1802 and in the 28th Foot 1805-1822.

It might be an idea to compare the signature on that to the signature on the Suffolk marriage register.

As Shaun says he was born in St Enoch. He appears to have still been under the age of 18 when the 28th Dragoons were disbanded on 24 May 1802. You should be able to find him if you check the baptism records for St Enoch around 1786.

The IGI have a few, including - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:9W6B-YNQ

You could also check Ancestry for Peninsular medals with the 28th Foot. These were issued to anyone still alive in June 1847.
