William Craig son of William Aikenhead Craig
« on: Thursday 14 April 16 10:34 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on William born 20-1-1872 to William Aikenhead Craig and Janet McFarlane in Dumbarton. He  married twice, being a widow at the time of his second marriage to Elizabeth Macpherson  17/10/1916 in Glasgow. At that time his occupation was " hotel boots"  They had sons Malcolm Iain and Peter.
Family oral history has it that he served in the Anglo Boer War, where he fired the first shot at the relief of Ladysmith. He may have served briefly in WW1.
I have no details of his first marriage, and can not be sure of the birth dates of his sons.
Thank you
Bruce

Indeed it might, but how to  identify the right William Craig's demise in Glasgow has me stumped. Our  family have the names but not the dates for the Craig ancestors. Malcolm and his son, now both deceased did not pass on those necessary details, and 20th/21st  century privacy laws prevent access to birth records which might give some clues. William's forebears on the other hand have been traced, at least in theory, back to Gavin Craig born in Dunbar in 1820.

How old was Elizabeth Macpherson when she married in 1916 ?
Her death may narrow down a death date for William.

About 24 . Her parents are named too, but the age conflicts with the entry for the family in the 1901 census which suggests she may have been only 19.

I did see a death for an Elizabeth Craig(other surname Macpherson) 1968 Lanark , born c1897.

If that is the correct Elizabeth it probably wont help find a death for your William  :(
