The Boys Home, Leicester - Help finding records
« on: Friday 15 April 16 11:29 BST (UK) »
Hi

Has anyone every come across The Boys Home, Stoneygate Grove, Avenue Road Leicester records for adults staying there rather than children?

My disappearing great grandmother gave this as her address in December 1912 and when i enquired with the children society they had no file for my grandpa, who should of been with her at the time. I do wonder if she came there with a new child (as she had come from a maternity home in London) but after this address she next appears in Blackpool!

and she had left my grandpa with a lady in Leicester.. no idea if this was an adoption or more likely just an arrangement... she never came back for him :(

Any help would be gratefully accepted :)

Rachel

Leicestershire records office have the following that may be of help:

LEICESTER CORPORATION SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT RECORDS:

Leicester Poor Law Union Records:
Register of children committed to blind & industrial schools, 1874-1949

Leicester Corporation Records:
Receiving & Scattered Homes, 1906-1949.
Miscellaneous, nd. 1910-1914.

I have an index for the Receiving Home Admissions - his surname wasn't Smith by any chance was it?

Found this one in the Leicester School Exemption registers Index 1892-1935

John Cassell birth 21   Dec   1908
Left School 8   Jan   1923

Fiche Ref. 30D73/09-5   165

Thought it was worth a look if you are close to the records office if it's your grandpa, will give you schools and achievements, not viewed these at the records office so don't know how much extra details they may have.
