Annie Louisa Mead
« on: Monday 18 April 16 10:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find the birth record of Annie Louisa Mead. I have her daughter's Birth record (no named father) and that states Annie was a Companion Help (Domestic) of Chilton, Long Crendon R D.

In 1924 mother and daughter were living at The Lodge, Priest End in Thame. Annie's daughter was adopted 3 years later.

Any help with Annie's Ancestors would be gratefully received. I have a few born 1886, 1892 that I thought it might be but all guess work.

Many thanks

What year was her daughter born?

The one born 1892 Aylesbury looks a good bet as she has same occupation.

Not quite the right district but maybe this birth

Mar 1892 Buckingham
Mead Annie Louisa

She looks to be the daughter of Matthew and Annie.

Matthew 33
Annie 32
Annie L 9 birthplace Edgcott which comes under Buckingham
Joseph R 8
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Possible parents have died before 1911 as son Joseph is with an uncle.

Matthew death 1905 age 37 admin to Richard Henry Mead suggesting wife Annie has already passed away.

Death for Annie Mead 1903 Buckingham age 37 which is out but could be her.

I wonder if "The Lodge" referred to is Thame workhouse?  Maybe ask on the Oxfordshire board.

Daughter was Audrey born Sep 1924.

Not being au fait with the district I have looked onliine to see where Chilton and Long Crendon were listed in 1890-1920's. Buckinghamshire records come up which isn't a lot of help when looking for any ancestors.

I agree with the Domestic being the right occupation in the 1892 birth. Edgcott seemed a bit of a distance from Chilton or Long Crendon though.

Thanks for the help

Edgcott is not that far from Thame,  probably around 15 miles.  Young girls travelled a fair distance for work around this time, my own grandmother who was brought up in Cambridge worked in Suffolk and Bedford before she married.

Just over 10 miles (Edgcott to Long Crendon) would not be considered a long way.

Where I lived as child in Cheshire we had two "large" establishments.  I was told, and looking at the census returns I can verify it, that very often staff was recruited from outside the immediate area - it stopped them "running home" :o :o  Very few of the staff were born local to the area.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Annie Louisa Mead is in the 1911 census:
Age 19, born 1892 in Aylesbury, Bucks
Living in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
Occupation: Domestic help

Working back from there, Annie L. Mead was the daughter of Matthew (born 1868 in Dodderhill or Dodershall) and Annie (born 1869 in Claydon)

In 1871 and 1881, Matthew Mead, born 1868 in Doddershall, is the son of Richard Mead (born 1826 in Mursley or Swanbourne) and Susan T. Mead (born 1840 in Newton Longville)

In 1851, Richard Mead, born 1826 in Mursley, mother Mary, born 1794 in Stewkley.
Siblings Joseph 36, Susan 19, Catherine 17, William 14

This must be the same family in 1841, in Swanborne: Joseph Mead, 50, and Mary Mead, 45,
children Joseph 25, Mary 24, Sarah 19, Catherine 7, William 5, George 15

Before that, there were people named Mead living in Murlsey, Soulbury, Stewkley, Wing etc for hundreds of years.
