Fergus or Ferguson Family-Donaghmore
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 23:05 BST (UK) »
I am interested in finding out anything on  Andrew Fergus who married Elizabeth McCracken. I know of 5 children but I'm not sure if they came from Donaghmore or Finnard as I am not familiar with the area of Co.Down. As well some of my family appear to be Church of Ireland and some Presbyterian, so I do not at the moment know of any churches that could help me out.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I plan to visit Ireland in June and would like to see the area they lived in.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
On 11 Oct 1866 Andrew Fergus married Eliza McCracken in Downshire Road Presbyterian Church, Newry. The Familysearch site shows the births of the early children in Donaghmore and the later children in Finnard.

Hi again,
Using the Griffiths Valuation (1864) there is an Andrew Fergus who lived in Finnard on a two acre farm. Using the Griffith revision books the property remained in the name of Andrew Fergus until 1892 when the name changed to Andrew Ferguson. I also discovered that the Andrew who married Eliza had a father also called Andrew.
Additionally in the PRONI Will Calendars there is referencs to an Andrew Ferguson of Finnard who died on 26 May 1921.

I started with civil parish maps:-the whole of co down
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/MAPS/CoDownParishes.htm from that I could see the Newry parish sits below Donaghmore
then I looked at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/MAPS/NewryTownlands.htm and could see Finnard townland is away over on the eastern border of Newry, the road from Newry to Rathfriland runs through it. Rathfriland is on the east side of Drumgath parish
from the Newry townlands I deduced Ouley is the three townlands due north of Finnard, later I discovered it is also a district name that includes Finnard
the exact site of the farm should be listed in the valuations lists at PRONI
and once the plot number is known one can go back to the original valuation ie
Griffiths Valuation of Ireland see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
so here we have first the details
Fergus   , Andrew   Finnard   Newry   Down  in 1864, in plot no 40,  land just over 1 acre, house value 15 shillings, twenty years later still in his name in its plot history however he has Fergus crossed out and replaced with Ferguson in PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/22/19C (1883 - 1893), its still in his name PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/22/19E (1908 - 1921)
so next you can look up the map which includes Finnard and see the house marked in its setting, you could do a screne save or take a closeup with a digital camera. the website can change the map from historical to the present, however google has not got a satellite picture available.  you can switch to modern google and see unnamed roads etc
it would be easy to find in a car if you have prepared yourself in advance

also in Griffiths 1864 is a neighbouring townland
Fergus,    James   Saval More   Newry   Down in 1864 irrrelvant for me at this stage, but might turn out to be a relative

http://www.ancestryireland.com/  quickly searched no joy

church records not straight forward, where they married might be best starting ;oint
P. Newry, Downshire Road
Baptisms, 1849-1965; marriages, 1845-1909; communicants’ roll, 1884-99. microfilm at PRONI Belfast

while I was doing this another good reply which I have expanded going back in time, so you now also have parents Andrew Fergus’s father is Andrew and Eliza McCracken father is James and bingo guess where a James McCracken lives in 1864, Finnard so back to Griffiths, but I have run out of time, so over to you.

last thought go to the PRONI Belfast to see the original tithe applotment books for Newry which are not on line  but may exist
when i tried http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/newry-parish.php#.Vxdh5WOoc5Q you are referred to http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/armagh/tithe-applotments/newry-parish.php#.Vxdh9WOoc5Q

As well another generation to trace Andrew's father and Mother and Elizabeth's parents. Great help from very kind people!!! All the best.

Welcome back from your research trip to Ireland.

Margaret Anne Ferguson married Thomas Graham [Jr.] 1865 in Second Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church.  Normally a couple married in the bride's church; though the Harrisons were of Ballynahinch.  Her father was John Ferguson.

Margaret and Thomas Graham had a daughter Elizabeth Graham who married James Henry Harrison [Sr.] at Third Ballynahinch Presbyterian.
