George Henry Wilson 1895 - 1969 of Bolsover
« on: Sunday 24 April 16 10:37 BST (UK) »
It is the long Anzac Day weekend down here in Australia and Ancestry have given us free access to the WW1 records for the weekend! Any ideas on how to track down the war service of my wife's grandfather. All we know is that he was a miner from Bolsover and do not have any regiment or service number. Would anywhere in Chesterfield or Bolsover have any records that may assist?? Family legend suggest he may have been a stretcher bearer as he may have been a Quaker....
Any assistance appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

Nearly 70% of the WW1 Service Records were destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid! ::)

Best to look on Ancestry; if his record exists, you should be able to find it?

Many thanks for that info - the problem is though that we have no idea of his regiment or number. Do you think it would do any good to contact the local Chesterfield historical society or the British Legion??

Just put his name, date of birth, and birthplace in the records and see if anything obvious appears.

Do you know where his family were living and what their names were, to help to see if you have the right man?

Do you know his exact date of birth, as exact age shows on many records. (And there is an interesting one on Ancestry).

Do not forget the electoral rolls - if you have a family address. All men over 21 had the vote from the 1918/19 elections. Derbyshire Record Office should have them. So post a question on the Derbyshire section.
