Annie Selby and Henry George Harwood married 1892, Nottingham
« on: Saturday 30 April 16 21:18 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the correct Annie Selby(b1872) , who would be my great grandmother.
The couple moved to Grimsby around 1900. They had two children , Albert , born in Nottingham in 1895, and my grandmother, Maud Lillian in 1901 in Grimsby. Annie Selby died in 1903,and Henry re married.
Most of the family trees show Annie to be from Cromwell , Notts , and her father is John (b1841), from Norwell. However, there are two more Annie Selbys around that time (b Nottingham and Bashford) with John as their Father!

As Henry George Harwood grew up in Nottingham (although born in Portsea 1870) , is seems to me much more likely that Annie Selby would have grown up in Nottingham as well.

Can anyone help unravel this a little?
Any help is gratefully received
John

Hello and welcome  :)

The marriage certificate would show her father's name and occupation. This may help decide which Annie she is also the witnesses could be of help in identifying her.

My gut instinct is that the one born Cromwell, dau. of John and Julia, is not your one.

Their daughter was Annie Elizabeth whose birth was registered Mar.1872 Southwell regn. district (the district that covered Cromwell).

In 1901 your Annie's birthplace is given as Nottingham (I note the enumerator was trying to save ink as everyone on the page has just places given, not counties.  It clearly says Nottingham for her and I would think her birth is likely to be the Annie Selby birth reg'd Nottingham in June qtr.1872.

However, this is only conjecture - only the marriage certificate can give you further information but I personally don't think your Annie is the one born Cromwell.

Wow, thanks for the offer, but I have bitten the bullet and ordered one!!

I am glad that my doubts about which Annie is my relative are reasonable.

Can anyone tell me if there is a street map of Nottingham available for around 1900, so I can check out the various census addresses?

I have the marriage certificate now, and can confirm that the father is John Selby the lace maker. Therefore , I can deduce that Annie is most likely to be the one born in Nottingham, and not Cromwell. Her age is a bit 'variable' on the Census. I can also follow the correct parents as well.

What is interesting is that the couple married in Nottingham in 1892 , and went to live/work in Grimsby. From the marriage certificate, a witness was Eliza Dina Harwood, who was Henrys sister. I found that she married Frank Shardlow in Nottingham in 1890 , and they went to Grimsby (census 1891). The Harwoods then lived with Eliza and Frank in their early years of their move from Nottingham to Grimsby.
