Merchant Navy - ship and port records interpretation
« on: Saturday 07 May 16 11:48 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Please would some knowledgeable person interpret these figures for me from the records of David Duncan  and the BT112 lists  1843-45.

My D.D. came from Plymouth and we believe this is he.  He was discharged from his ship in Ceylon in 1847.  But I would love to know the ship ports and where they were travelling to in these years.

We believe the ships are the Dash - or Dart (- I can only find Dasher so maybe Dart),  William Marray and ? Avon.

I think what I am reading is 62.18(or 9)39 /  62.186 / 762. 1372    -  or should the last two be 62.1867 / 62. 1372

And on the next line  10.1.42 / 29.5.4? / 3/11/43 - or  last two   29.5.43 / 11 .43 ?

Next line  = names of ships.

And help gratefully received.  :)

The number "62" is the port number for Liverpool, where all 3 vessels were registered in 1842/43.
The remaining figures, 1839, 1867, 1872 are the vessels port rotation number. There is no known "key" to connect port rotation numbers to an individual ships name. The rest of the numbers are the date a particular voyage ended.

My educated guess is.

AVON 261 tons built New Brunswick 1838, owned by Moore and Co., recorded voyage Liverpool to Jamaica and return. Seems the voyage you are intersted in commerced in August intended port of arrival Montreal and other Arcadian ports returned from Savannah.
DASH (there was no Liverpool registered vessel with the name DART in 1842/43) 112 tons, built Chepstow 1826, owned by Cram and Co., recorded voyage coasting Liverpool/Bristol
WILLIAM MURRAY built Liverpool 1840, 157 tons, owned Stett and Co., recorded voyage Liverpool/Genoa and return. Seems she was a regular trader to the Mediterranean, Italy in particular.
She sailed from Liverpool on the first of January 1843. Was in collision with the steamer Medina on the 6th off Beaumaris and returned to Liverpool for repair. Sailed ? Finally arrived back to Liverpool from Palermo 28 May 1843.
To confirm that your man was aboard, you need to view the individual crew agreements stored at Kew.
I know that's difficult for you.

Checked out the Crew Agreement of WILLIAM MURRAY and this confirms David Duncan age 19, born Plymouth ( 8th one on Crew Agreement).was on board for her voyage from Palermo He signed on 15/FEB/1843 so after the repairs she suffered when in collision with MEDINA.  Just love the Masters name MUNGO DOBIE. DD's previous ship is clearly given as DASH. Sorry did not have time to look at AVON.
Got better photo's if you need them.
