Smith (great name :-( )
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 12:57 BST (UK) »
I am descended from a family of Corn merchants and Millers in Norfolk called Smith.

One of their number (William Rayson Smith) went to Canada, probably just after 1870, and was back in the UK by 1897.

I think I once read that there was a famous Smith company/dynasty in Canada, either in Milling, Malting, Brewing or Distilling.

Question 1 - is there really, or am I making it up?

Question 2 - is "my" Smith family anything to do with it?

I'll settle for answers to just question 1, certainly for the moment.

I'm sure I saw it, but I now can't re-find it. >:(

I don't think it's one I'm (not!) remembering, but I'll put it on my "possibles" checklist, thank you.

I've now found that another of my Smiths went to Canada; one Alfred Smith Smith (that's right, his middle name was Smith!!).

He was b1847, and was married to Sarah Jane, b1855.

Know children:
William Henry, b1878
Joanna Mary R, b1879
Hilda R, b1880,
Alfred R, b1882
Anne E, b1891

I've found them in the 1901 Census;

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/DisplayHousehold.jsp?sdid=4653&household=16

EDIT2; they're in Canada for the 1891 census; the 1901 image gave me an immigration year of 1886
But have not yet found them in the 1891 census;
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1891/Pages/about-census.aspx

I have also failed to find their census image in 1901;
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1901/Pages/1901.aspx

Despite having the automatedgenealogy transcript. :'(

EDIT; I've found the 1901 image, by searching for "Alferd Smith" !!

END

Does anyone have better search skills (or familiarity with the search engine) than me?

You can search the 1901 (which you have now) and 1911 census for free, and probably easier, through this link. You get the transcript and then can click at the top to see the image.

Added: was Hilda Hilda Rayson Smith, her Mother Sara Jane Saunders?

They are in London, Middlesex Co., Ontario for the 1891 Census:

Smith, Alfred, aged 43, married, born England, Church of England, labourer
Smith, Sarah, aged 37, married, born England
Smith, William, aged 12, born England
Smith, Mary, aged 11, born England
Smith, Hilda, aged 10, born England
Smith, Ray, aged 8, born England
Smith, Anna, aged 0, born Ontario
Saunders, Rosanna, aged 30, sister-in-law, born England, bookbinder

The Smiths arrived in Canada aboard the Corean on 19 May 1886 into Quebec out of London/Plymouth. They had booked passage as far as Brockville.  Rosanna is with them as well.

Annie Elsie Rayson Smith was born April 8, 1891 in London, Middlesex Co., Ontario, the daughter of Alfred Smith Smith & Sarah Jane Saunders.

Wowsers - I'll get that all into my DB. Thank you very much for that.

I guessed the good folk of this sub-forum might know their way around these resources better than me.

In the interest of Teaching a Man to Fish, can someone give me (or point me to) the pages/searches/tutorials/help that would have allowed me to find this stuff for myself without bothering you good people?
