Ann Tury born Chudleigh c.1816
« on: Monday 23 May 16 07:29 BST (UK) »
Ann appears in the 1891 census as a pauper, mother in law to a James (Henry?) Shillabeer and thence, supposedly, mother of his wife. Emily (Louisa?) Bowden. So far I have found no trace of Ann Tury outwith this one record. It raises a few questions with me: have I found the correct Emily Bowden (1861 census suggests William & Susanna as ELB's parents); have I found the correct Shillabeer family with James & Emily the parents of Harold WJ Shillabeer....Anybody able to enlighten me, please?

There is a baptism of an Emily BOWDEN at Chudleigh, 27 Jun 1860, daughter of Abraham and Anne.

Samuel JOHNS married Agnes SHILLABEER in 1871. She might be the Agnes baptised at South Brent in 1853, daughter of William and Mary.

According to a tree on Ancestry, James Henry SHILLABEER a son of William and Mary married Emily BOWDEN. James Henry was baptised at South Brent in 1858.

Abraham BOWDEN died in 1865, and there is a marriage of an Ann BOWDEN in 1872 to a William JURY, which is a possibility.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try and follow up the "Jury" lead. It looks promising. It will then be a case of rationalising Emily's dob...I like to aim for a measure of accuracy, at the very least, but maybe tilting at windmills and coping with Ancestry's innumerable transcription errors is a bit too much?

Chudleigh baptisms are available via GenUKI at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/Chudleigh - an Ann CAUSLEY was baptised there 17 Sep 1815 (born 5 Sep 1815) base child of Ann CAUSLEY.

Bingo!! Thanks to the "Jury" pointer it looks as though Ann Jury started out as Ann Hammacot who married Abraham Bowden. 1851 census has a James Hammacott as brother in law to Abraham Bowden. So that gives me Abraham Bowden & Ann Hammacott as Emily's parents.  I'm unsure that the James Shillabeer who married Emily was the 1881 lodger...but I suppose it's more than likely. There is another Hammacott, grand-daughter to Ann in 1871 census. So out goes Emily Louisa! It's all those loose ends...
