Thom family in Cape town 1883
« on: Monday 23 May 16 16:44 BST (UK) »
I have found a record on familysearch.org of the baptism of esselene Thom in 1883 parents william henry thom and mary thom. William is given as a "soldier". Im amazed and intrigued to find this record!
Esseline appears back in london on 1911 census on her own. Cant find parents on any census or a marriage in uk.

trying to guess whether her father was involved in a conflict at the time although no dates seem to tie up with 1883 exactly. Also the surname Thom can be from Scotland and he was perhaps in the Cape town highlanders regiment ? or is it more likely he was born there ?

Just not sure where to go next any advice would be great

Thanks
Chris

I can't help specifically, but I do recall some families with the surname Thom in Zimbabwe and Zambia (Southern & Northern Rhodesia as was) in the 1950s and  onwards. I believe one family had a store in Harare, and there were Thoms farming in Zambia, but I can't remember more than that.  However it might be worth looking there.

Hi Thanks again for your thoughts on this. I suppose what i really want to know is were this Thom family from Scotland or from South Africa. As Esseline appears alone in london in 1911 (a music hall artist !) my gut feeling is that they are Scottish but would a soldier have took his wife with him to South Africa  and had a child ? I think i need to search uk census and see if i can find anything on the family either before or after they appear in South Africa.
Thanks
Chris
