Medal card
« on: Thursday 26 May 16 16:41 BST (UK) »
Can someone explain this medal card for me, please.  I can see that he was in the East Yorkshire Rgt and was in France.  Was it just for being there, or is there anything else involved?

He was obviously wounded in France, and awarded the silver war badge in 1915.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi sutton

So this main gained all three medals.  He received the 1914-15 star (and not the 1914 star) as he was not in the services at the beginning of the war.  http://www.greatwar.co.uk/medals/ww1-campaign-medals.htm

He was wounded and received a SWB (Silver War Badge) and could wear this on his lapel to show why he was not at the front and had been injured. Remember there was a time that white feather's were handed out to all men who looked able bodied but were not serving so wearing a SWB proved they had done their bit for King and country.  As mentioned the theatre of war for this man was  (1) France. His enlistment date is also given on this card.

Hope this helps

This might be of interest to you:

I assume it can only be the same man?

Also, here's a link to the WW1 records of the East Yorks Regt. If you scroll down to the 2nd Battalion section you will be able to see what battles they were involved in and when. https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/units/4693/east-yorkshire-regiment/

That's fascinating, thanks.  It means he joined the army when he was 17.
