What a shame that it is not the right one, I was trying to imagine him 6ft 3ins as Valentine was very tall, I am pretty sure now he changed his name , but why is the big question.
but many thanks for looking for me.

Australian Electoral Roll
1906  Capricornia/South Kolan
WRENCH Isabell South Kolan HD
WRENCH William  South Kolan Butcher

First attestation paper shows his sister's name but once again hard to read.  Husband is W. WRENCH.  ?William.

Perhaps his sister had a nick name :-\

Incidentally there is a Victor Valentine RHODES who was getting money from people as an ex-soldier with a false missing leg in Adelaide in 1927.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page12401421

I wonder if this is same Victor Rhodes (alias Conway Rupert MORRIS) who jorose found enlisting in Qld - and the coincidence becomes greater if he concocts a middle name of Valentine ...?

adding : probably not relevant ...

But Conway Rupert MORRIS was living in South Australia in 1939-1943.
And he was in various spots of bother in South Australia http://www.rootschat.com/links/01hp5/
He originally gave his next-of-kin as brother Francis George RHODES of expeditionary forces - no not an enlistment but there is one for Francis George MORRIS with mother Elizabeth.

adding : Elizabeth MORRIS (mother) died in 1941 in Norwood, South Australia
Francis Ulrick MORRIS was her deceased husband.  She was mother of Con, Frank and Betty
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article44958152.
Just confirming that there were no other MORRIS brothers (unaccounted for) who could have enlisted as Rhodes  :)

Well found Gerry.

The book “Bundaberg in Print 110 Years of News” was published 2009 by Bundaberg Newspaper Company,  22 – 24 Targo Street, Bundaberg 4670.  This is a tabloid sized book, each year has two full pages of snippets.   Here's one  :)

1911

A fire broke out in the Wrench Bros general store on June 1 between 9:30 and 10:00 pm writes the South Kolan correspondent.  The building and contents were completely gutted.  It took the efforts of all available assistants to save the Hotel de Posen from catching fire.

Name Changes
You were asking about name changes.   It is entirely possible that Valentine did not change his name.  He would not have needed any documentation to prove his identification when enlisting or marrying.  He was obviously known as Valentine Richard RHODES, a harvester, when in the Ballimore district prior to enlisting.   He obviously knew that there were people surnamed Wrench at South Kolan, near Bundaberg when enlisting.   South Kolan was and still is a very small community.  It would be unlikely that he invented having a sister at South Kolan.  In nominating a sister as his next of kin it is possible that both his parents were deceased.   It was not, and actually is still not illegal to be known by any name, provided you are not setting about to deceive or commit a fraud.

Are either or both (his parents) noted as deceased on his Feb 1917 marriage certificate?

Who were the witnesses to that marriage?

From that marriage cert other information did he give about himself or his parents?
