Passport or passenger list to Europe

Hi

My ancestor Giovanni "John" Mazzei is last noted on his sons naturalisation record of 1925 as residing in Southampton, England.

He would have been 73 (born in Italy in 1852).

I have exhausted all possibilities including variant spellings of his name of him dying in Britain.

He doesn't seem to be on the 1939 register.

I am therefore convinced that he returned to either Italy or France (he lived in France in the 1880's and early 1890's and married a French woman).

If he emigrated to Europe from 1925-1939 would he have definitely needed a passport?

If so where can this be found?

And are there passenger lists to European ports from England from 1925-1939?

Where would these be kept?

Incoming and outgoing records for the UK do generally not including ships to/from Europe.

You mention his son naturalised in 1925 - should we take it that John himself was not a British citizen at this point?

Where in France did he live and where was his wife from?

Hi Jorose

John (Giovanni) had lived in England since about 1891, but there is no record of him being naturalised.

He was born in Colognora, Pescaglia, Lucca, Italy on 1st August 1852.

His wife (Evarestine Marie Lemen) was born in Beauvoir, Vendée, France on 29th October 1852.

They married in Nantes, France on 15th August 1881.

Their only child, Andrew was born in Havre, France on 2nd August 1887.

They came to Britain in about 1891.

They are in Blackpool in 1901 and in London in 1911.

Evarestine died in Holborn, London in 1912 and the next mention of Giovanni is him living in Southampton in the 1925 naturalisation record.
