Matt, as Jen mentioned, Nancy is a common variant of Ann/e. Also these names are connected with Agnes. See this great site www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=ann

Re trying to find a more specific place name for where John was born, unfortunately you are not likely to determine this from the 1841 census  :-\ Places of birth for this census year are given as either born in the county (where the census has taken place) or outside of county (of England/Ireland etc.).

....Another quirky thing about the 1841 census is that ages for everyone over the age of 15 was supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years. So, in the 1841 census, John who is showing as 50, should have fallen within in the age range of 50-54. Children under the age of 15 are supposed to show at their actual age.

This looks to be some of the births and christenings for the children of Anne and John here:

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Amcpherson~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Aargyll~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Ajohn~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Aann~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Amcfarlane~

Early names of their children may help when trying to figure out possible names for John's parents.

What were the names of Ann McFarlane's parents from her death cert, if you have viewed it?

Hi Monica!

This is all enormously helpful information regarding the 1841 census, many thanks...

Anne's death certificate only lists her father's name (unfortunately) and it is Duncan MacFarlane, the same as one of her sons (he might have been the eldest boy Duncan, I think he was born in 1818).

Edit: just checked, Donald was the firstborn son in 1814, then Duncan. Sarah seems to have been the firstborn daughter, followed by a 'Christian'.
