Charlie Loo Chong from Omakau
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 04:58 BST (UK) »
Looking for his burial place, and if he has a head stone, especially with Chinese characters. Also a photo of the gentleman, or his fruit shop in Ophir.  In 1908 he had already been in NZ 28 years.    Have found the Papers past records, and probate on line.

Charlie Loo Chong, carrier and coal merchant, and a familiar figure in the Omakau district, was found dead in his bed on Tuesday last. The deceased had been in bad health for some months and an inquest was considered unnecessary. Dunstan Times , Issue 2765, 17 May 1915, Page 4

Hi. If you are wanting a headstone photo of Sam Hoy Dog who is buried at Oamaru can I suggest you create a memorial for him on the Find A Grave site and request a photo from one of their many volunteers. Very easy to do and hopefully you won't have to wait too long. Good luck.

The Omakau cemetery has been in use since the 1870s but I heard that there were also graves closer to Ophir which were moved as they kept getting flooded by the river.

I checked my book 'Ophir memories' but there is only generic info about the Chinese residents.

My Grandfather and three generations before him lived in the area, no doubt they would have known him!
