It would be good to know how Mark got back to this particular George Hill, if indeed it is the one he means.
Anyway, he was born in the workhouse.
If his mother was Mary -
Strand Union also used St Giles’s Workhouse. A Mary Hill, aged 28, was sent from there to Edmonton workhouse on 8 January 1887 (creed register)
The Edmonton a + d record has Marry Hill, 28, admitted there on that date, and discharged 8 June 92 to Leavesden. Presumably the asylum.
So Mary Hill should be in the Edmonton workhouse in the 1891 census?

The creed register for the Edmonton school has George Hill admitted 16 January 1889 (confirming Claire's report), informant mother. Just says he was discharged, not when or where.

Clarie, Rosie99 and Jon65
Thank you all so much for your replies. My Grandfather was a very modest man and the only thing he told his daughter about his childhood was he got a shilling and an orange for Christmas and claimed he was in Barnardo's  I did a search with them but they had no records. I got his discharge papers from National Archives and it listed Edmonton as his place of birth and a little research I joined the dots so to speak and concluded that he was at the orphanage attached to this Workhouse.  His marriage certificate does not list a father just his mother Mary.

It was a very sad start to life but he went on to have a full but modest life with four children [3 sons and 1 daughter] and 5 plus grandchildren. He served in both wars and I have attached a memorial images I created for him located at

his ships from his service records

Many many thanks for your efforts in adding my research
Regards
Mark

Almost certainly. TS Exmouth's own records are a fantastic resource, particularly the Boys' Record Books. They are held at LMA under the Metropolitan Asylums Board (MAB), separately from any poor law union records. They're not yet online, but I believe some are being digitised by the University of Sussex for an academic project.
