Where was Southampton Street 1881
« on: Monday 20 June 16 11:59 BST (UK) »
hi :)

I'm getting all confused with trying to work out where Southampton Street in 1881 would be now. I just can't get my head around if names have changed or if it is no longer there.

It comes under London, St James Clerkenwell, Pentonville 6a in the 1881 census
It also mentions it was in the parliamentary borough of Finsbury on the actual page.
Looking ahead to the next streets - South Street - Crown Stables  there is also mention of 67 Southampton Street (Robin Hood)
The description of the area on the first page starts of saying - west side of Southampton Street from the Pentonville Road and then just goes on to confuse me even more.

Please could someone tell me where Southampton Street would be now?

It's now called Calshot Street, and runs north off Pentonville Road.

South Street, Finsbury was renamed Southern Street in 1912.

A good site for this information is:

Thank you for this,

My 6x Great Grandad, John Spooner, born 1755, was buried in Clerkenwell on the 5th of April 1829. On the burial record, his address was put down as being Southampton Street.
So it is now called Calshot Street.

Thank you very much.

I think Rootschat is a really good site!  :) ;)

Hello There,

I have been trying to work out where Southampton Street was in 1829 when my 6x great granddad John Spooner was buried at St James Clerkenwell.

I presumed that it was in Clerkenwell during this time but I am not sure:

Looking at Calshot Street (which was Southampton Street), on modern maps it seems to be also close to Pentonville, and Kings Cross.

This was also the same street that Joseph Grimaldi died at in 1837.
On his Wikipedia page it states just that Southampton Street was in Islington. They have him being buried at "St James Churchyard, Pentonville." This confuses me a bit more because I thought it was in Clerkenwell.  ;)

But I suppose the answer is that Southampton Street in 1829 was indeed in Pentonville? From Wikipedia again:

"Pentonville was part of the ancient parish of Clerkenwell, and was incorporated into the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury by the London Government Act 1899. It has been part of the London Borough of Islington since 1965." -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentonville

Thank you very much.  :) ;)

This 1824-25 map of London clearly shows Southampton Street in Pentonville https://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/ids:8982548 (Middle map in the top row just South of the Regents Canal at the left edge)

Thank you very much for this,

John's son William Spooner was living at Henry Street in 1814 when his son Frederick William Spooner was born. This is very close to Southampton Street. Also, in the 1841 Census, William was living at Cumming Street, which was the next road along to the east of Southampton Street, as you view the map.  :) ;)
