Samuel Taylor Born Nottingham 1st Sept 1882
« on: Tuesday 21 June 16 11:34 BST (UK) »
Samuel Taylor enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1901 when he he gave his place of birth as Nottingham and his dob as 1st September 1882.  Cant find a birth on Ancestry or FreeBMD that matches, so am hopefully awaiting a Birth Cert.
Are there any Taylor researchers who maybe able to add any details regarding this Samuel Taylor please ?
Many thanks
Peter

Did he join up before or after 1901 census?  Did he give an occupation?

This is a possible, I guess -

1901
Plumstead, London
William H Taylor 47 steam engine maker fitter bn Nottingham
Sarah A 48 bn Nottingham
Samuel 19 Steam engine maker fitter bn Nottingham
Norman 12 bn Woolwich

IF that is the right one , then:
1891
34 Raglan Rd Plumstead
William H Taylor 37 machine maker fitter bn Lenton Nottingham
Sarah A 38 bn Lenton Nottingham
Samuel 9 bn Radford Nottingham
Norman 2 bn Plumstead Kent

same address, different household
James H Taylor 52 Engine fitter bn Leeds Yorks
Annie 56 bn Lenton Nottingham

Hello Carol and Liz
Many thanks for your replies.
Unfortunately, Samuel who was the son of William and Sarah also appears in the 1911 Census living with his Parents.  The Samuel I am looking for also appears in the 1911 Census but as a crew member of HMS Wildfire based at Sheerness.
It is possible that he gave an incorrect date of birth when enlisting, I have certainly found this to be the case in some previous research that I have undertaken.
Best regards
Peter

I think that one is with mum (now Harriet Harrison) and step dad Alfred Harrison and younger Harrisons in the later censuses.

What happened to Samuel after the navy?   Did he marry and, if so, what name was given for his father?

Hi Annette
He came out of the Nay in 1920 suffering from what is now referred to as Post Traumatic Stress.  What happened to him in later life is a compete mystery, which is why I am trying to piece together his early years in case they reveal any clues.  Sadly RN Records do not show any Next of Kin.
Best regards
Peter

If you don't know his family or what happened after he left the Navy he obviously isn't a relative then.

I remember seeing that when he enlisted in the Navy July 1901 his height was only 5' 3"/4" and thinking that he had maybe inflated his age somewhat.

Have found a family on 1891 census born in and living in Radford:

William Taylor   52    Pig Jobber
Ann Taylor        50
Tom Taylor 23      Pig Jobber
Hester Taylor  16        ditto
Leaith (?) Taylor 14     ditto
Saml. Taylor 6

(Wondering if the strange Christian name could be Salathiel birth regd Dec.1876)

The Saml. Taylor bc.1885 could be the Sam Taylor birth reg'd Dec.1884 - unfortunately I cannot find any of this family before or after 1891.   Nor do any of their children appear to have been baptised.

Could Sam Taylor - birth reg'd Dec.1884 Nottingham - have had a birthdate of 1st September I wonder and added 2 years to his true age in order to join the Royal Navy??
