Henry John Buckel - mar - Harriet Woodley 1873
« on: Tuesday 21 June 16 12:43 BST (UK) »

I have a  Henry John Buckell who is recorded as a "widower" when he married Elizabeth Chapman in 1878 in Harwell. He is aged 30,  s/o "Thomas, a farmer" and Elizabeth is aged 18 d/o Robert, Butcher.

Henry was bapt.. in Harwell 1848 the illeg.  s/o Sophia Elderfield who eventually married a Thomas Buckell and so he adopted the "Buckell" surname.

On FreeBMD I have found a marriage of Henry John Buckell to a Harriet Eliza Woodley in the Wallingford Regis. Dist. jun ¼ 1873. Could this be his 1st marriage?

I have looked in all my Oxon CDs and the Berks. Marr. Index but nothing is listed. Nor can I find any likely burials for a Harriet. They are only  a twig in my tree so I don't wish to buy the cert. so can anyone come up with any details please?

Yes - There is a burial image on Anc that shows her burial as Caton. Lancs

Edit - A Sarah Buckell was born on  Caton in the previous qtr in 1876 and was living with her grandparents in 1881 in Berkshire??

Hi Kay,

Thanks for that -  just seen your latest reply.

Yes that must be her as  the grand parents tie in nicely. Sophia Elderfield married Anthony Palmer in 1880 (Wantge Regis. Dist). after Thomas Buckell died in 1861
I wonder what she was doing up in Lancs. I suppose the next question is where was she born. I know there is a Harriet Eliza in Long Wittenham, Berks  1853,  but with different parents and she married there in 1876.

Many thanks.

Alan

It does seem an incredible distance to be away from home. There don't seem to be any Harriet Eliza Woodley's born in that area.

Hi Kay,

There must be a connection as I've got Sarah Buckell in the 1871 & 1881 censuses listed as being born in Caton but living in Berks. So now with Harriet being buried there, presumably she had relatives in Caton or was born there - nothing showing up so far.

Agree that Sarah and Harriet Eliza must be correct just the location is a long way from Berkshire.

Who did the Harriet Eliza Woodley born in Long Wittenham marry in 1876?   I can't see a marriage on FreeBMD or Harriet post 1871.
