Clooncun, Clonberne, Ballinasloe, Galway (MITCHELL)
« on: Wednesday 22 June 16 14:23 BST (UK) »
Hi. This is my first post so please go gentle on me in case I do anything wrong.

I am researching the Mitchell Family Tree and have come to a dead end.

I have a letter here from 26 Nov 1956 where my family lived.  The address is simply Clooncun (I think) Clonberne, Ballinasloe.

My father went to visit in 1957/58 and says he remembers the building he stayed in used tobe a pig sty (lovely!) and that there were bullet holes in the wall.  He said there was no electricity and transport was pony and trap.  he said there were fields all around and not much else.  he also remembers a family by the name of Slattery who lived close by and were possible cousins.  My Dad has now passed away so I can't get more clues.

The letter is from Kitty and John (Mitchell, I presume) although I cannot yet place them in my tree.  The letter states that Mary and girls are visiting, so also presuming they had a daughter Mary who also had children.

My great grandfather Timothy Mitchell comes from here and his father was John (not sure of his mothers name ... still looking)

So does anyone know anything about the area or the family name.  I have a subscription to the Irish records, but nothing is coming up.

Any help or direction at all would be much appreciated, thanks

Cath

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

The problem here could be that it is a postal address, which in rural areas often go by postal sorting offices rather that geography.
There is a Clooncon the opposite side of  Glennmaddy than Clonbern.

That said there are Slatterys and Mitchells in Clonbern in 1911

But not in Clooncon.

Yes it does like postal... so top line would be their location/address!

May not be the correct family but the Mitchells and Slatterys were related in 1901

Thankyou.  I've seen this and still wondering if there is a link.

There are 3 brothers I'm searching for and none of them seem to be on the Irish Roots site but other family members are.  Driving me bonkers it is, haha. I guess it's no fun if it's too easy though eh? ;)
