James Topping born 1867 in Preston,a smith married Mary Hannah Roskell Preston 1890.
He is 'missing' from home in Preston in 1901.Where is he ?
And again in 1911. Mary Hannah is still in Preston with Mary 19 and Samuel 7.
In 1911 there is a James Topping 45 professional vocalist lodging in Barnsley with wife Ruth 30 born Stockport and daughter Evelyn 3.
his descendants (first wife ) say that he was a music hall artiste.
Is it possible to find him in 1901 and/or anything about his music hall career please.

a real long shot [ one to be shot down in flames me thinks ] here goes ive looked for a birth for a ruth born stockport born 1881 and found just this one ruth beard a ruth beard single appears in 1901 cen as born hyde chshire occ thread mill bobbin winder  but I cant find her in 1911 cen  what could be her appears in 1939 as single occ  twine winder fine cotton spinner  stockport  ,, then looked for a marriage between james topping and a ruth or ruth beard and cant find one , several deaths show for a james toppings with a birth year approximate to yours appear before 1939 as I cant find him in it .
hope you can make some sense of the above and feel it worth checking it yourself in case ive missed something.

He is unlikely to have married Ruth, as Mary Hannah is still alive.

I think Ruth Beard sounds a good bet for '2 nd ' wife as in 1911she is a thread reeler (linens).
I wonder what happened to Evelyn?
