Liverpool Melia family
« on: Friday 08 July 16 21:00 BST (UK) »
I'd like to find the death certificate of Margaret Melia (nee Ashton) born in Mayo, Ireland about 1857 and who lived in Liverpool. There are quite a few people with the same name in the Liverpool Irish community so I'm trying to whittle them down. The last probable individual is in the 1911 census, where there is a Margret Melia, Head, hawker, b 1859 Mayo, a widow, living in Gomer Street. Apart from the birthplace and date, some other members of the family lived in Gomer Street which is a good sign.

Before I send for the certificate I'd like to identify the other people in the household in 1911. These are Anne Birchall, daughter, married, born 1879 in Liverpool, and her 2 daughters Susan and Anne born 1901 snd 1903. Anne's husband is not in the household. Ideally, I'd like to find a marriage between Anne Melia and a Mr Birchall but can't find one (nor can I find a daughter of Margaret called Anne. Melia is often mis-spelled as Mealey or Malley etc and the Irish Melias often use their middle names on documents, so she could be Mary Anne etc.

I can't find Margaret in 1939, so if this isn't my ancestor I'll have to look at the earlier death dates, but I'd be grateful for any help.

Thank you.
Lesley

Where do you have a definite sighting of Margaret in the censuses?

Baptism from Latin:
1901 St Joseph's
Susan Birchall - parents James and Ann nee Sansbury

Interesting note in margin that she married James Melia in 1919

Just to add to your puzzle!

Now ...

1903 St Francis Xavier

Anne daughter of James and Ann Birchall maiden name Melia or Saunders  ::)

There are notes which my Latin of fifty odd years ago is struggling with!
I think she may have  married Joshua Melia son of John and Sarah Melia 17 October 1927 but there is something else dated 11 April 1927  ::)

There is another child James baptised 1905 - Birchall/Sansbury so think Saunders is perhaps wrong but where does Melia come into it in Anne's  baptism  :-\

Anne Sansbury's father is James according to marriage.

This looks to be Margaret and Anne in 1881 so not your Margaret

Hi Lesley,
I have been looking over the two threads. Is William Melia who married Mary Ann Battle your relative?
Could you give the details please?

The Margaret Melia buried at Ford Cemetery on 7 Jan 1921 died at the Liverpool Workhouse she is buried in RD 954 a private family grave you could ask Marienne (username: Ozranga) to tell you other names of people in this grave. Ask about it here:-
