The Rev George Carter married Catherine Courtenay as his second wife in 1851. George was the Rector at Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire for many years.
**
I am interested in George's first wife, the mother of George Frederick St John Carter b 1842 Northamptonshire and Elizabeth Joanna Louisa Carter b circa 1845 in Kent.
**
My suspicion is that George married Elizabeth St John in Lewes, Sussex in the March quarter of 1841. Can anybody confirm this with a newspaper announcement or other record which gives details of George and Elizabeth's family.
**
St John appears as christian names for later family members. I have seen an article about Ernest Courtenay Carter, son from the second marriage who perished on the Titanic, where George's first wife was perhaps Elizabeth née Pointer.
**
I appreciate any help.

A copy of either of the childrens birth certs will confirm her maiden name.  Both births are on freebmd

A copy of their 1841 marriage cert will show who their respective fathers were and names of witnesses

When and where was George born?  How old was Elizabeth when she died and where did she die?

Thank you Carole.
I am aware of that, but am reluctant to buy a certificate for a distant relation, especially if it turns out to be incorrect ( I mean the marriage certificate).
I was challenged by this topic as other trees on Anc***** agree on George's second wife, but none have established who was his first wife.

Marvellous! Thanks very much Jen.
I found a reference to Honourable General St John in India. I wonder if it's the same gent and if Elizabeth was born overseas. What's his christian name?
**
Elizabeth must have died around 1847/48. I have yet to find a death record that fits.

We have made excellent progress, so I shall explore further.
Richard
P.S. I shall purchase the marriage certificate if necessary.

Elizabeth is mentioned on here + her marriage to George Carter.
Her dates are 11 July 1814 – 27 October 1846

The newspaper article I now see says "the 4th son of John Carter Esq. of Pinley"
**
Was his father John or George?
