Place names
« on: Tuesday 19 July 16 15:53 BST (UK) »

Hi
Can anyone tell me if there was a place named Blackfields in the County of Surrey !!!

The reason I ask is I have a Samuel H Dyer  born abt  1806 in Christchurch, Surrey.
But the 1861 census shows him as born abt 1806 in Blackfields, Surrey.....
I understand it's a long time ago and names change, any ideas please.

Many thanks

tomm

If you mean Samuel the Brass turner, it actually says Blackfriars in the 1861 census.

I was thinking it must be Blackfriars. Blackfriars Road runs right through Christ Church parish to Blackfriars Bridge

Hi Jebber and ShaunJ

Many thanks for your replies, yes I'm sure that's the answer, the 1861 definitely gives it as blackields
even in the index at the bottom, hence my post.

My thanks to you folks

Regards

tomm

Findmypast and the Genealogist both have it correctly indexed as Blackfriars,

I have posted a correction on Ancestry.

Never trust transcriptions. It's clearly Blackfriars:
