According to birth entry/1881 Census James Arthur Kemp birth reg'd Dec.qtr.1880 Hailsham, Sussex.

He was the youngest (transcribed by ancestry as James C. rather than James A. as on original page) of 9 children of Timothy Kemp and wife Maria (Maria Bonds married 1865 Hailsham).   All children are shown as born Wartling, Sussex.

Then tragedy appears to strike - both Timothy and his wife Maria's deaths are recorded in the Sept.qtr.1885 Tonbridge, Kent - and in 1891 James A., plus 2 older brothers Timothy and John, are at an Orphans Boys Homes in Leominster, Herefordshire (why sent so far away I have no idea).  Again, ancestry's transcribing not good - all the boys have been transcribed as 'nephew' when the actual word is 'orphan'.

Since he was only around 5 when his parents died his knowledge of his birthplace may be sketchy.

He was baptised 26/12/1880 Bodle Street Green - just up the road from Wartling (on FindMyPast) and I think his actual birthdate may have been 26th October.

Very sad story from Annette but...

It's things like that which adds background rather than just names & dates.
