Mary Ribbans born about 1795 approx Rushmere St.Andrew
« on: Monday 25 July 16 05:47 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have a Mary Ribbans born about 1795 who is the mother of Elizabeth born 1818 Rushmere St.Andrew.  Elizabeth is the illegitimate d/o Mary as I have her, Mary, in the 1851 census as Unm, aged 53,  living with her now married daughter Elizabeth Mann. The 1861 is similar.   Unfortunately it just shows everyone as being born in Rushmere.

there is a death regis. for Mary in 1886 aged 94 which may be her.

I'm trying to find out where Mary came from and who her parents were to see if they fit into my tree.

Is anybody able to help please?

I couldn't find a baptism for Mary Ribbans in Rushmere St Andrew c.1795, however a William and Elizabeth Ribbons (late Canham) are baptising children in the parish at this time.

Hannah 21-4-1793
Joseph 16-9-1798
Anthony 3-8-1803

William Ribbons and Elizabeth Canham
both singlepersons of the parish of Rushmere St Andrew
Married by banns 2oth December 1779
Both marked X
In presence of Mary Baxall and Christopher Shulver (X)

Elizabeth d/o Mary Ribbans baptised 22nd November 1818

Hi Annes,

Thank you for help - sorry for the lateness in replying.

Mary Ribbans never married, at least upto 1861, as in each census she is "Un"married and is either listed as a pauper,  mother-in-law or a boarder,  living with her daughter and family. Problem is all the family are grouped en-bloc  shown as coming from Rushmere.

I have now found what I think is her burial in 1864 aged 75 in Rushmere St.Andrew giving a possible y.of b. as 1785.

There is also a bapt. in Ipswich St.Matthew 29-9-1779 for Mary d/o James & Mary. This would make her aged 39 when she had Elizabeth in 1818 a bit late in life but not impossible.
