Help with French translation please - Joseph Shaw death Montreal

  Ah now I can see it and am not sure how I missed the word 'age'.    So the word near the beginning is decede - deceased.

Another little input. soufrante de neuf ans en.. translates as suffered nine year with

Its a pity the next word isn't legible.

Thank you, it definitely is a shame about the next word, would be so nice to know what he suffered with for 9 years, such a long time.

Would be great also to find out where the burials were for people who died in prison. 

It looks like all the other deaths on the page were either hospital or prison.

Some confusion here, I think?

When I first suggested soixante dix neuf ans (= aged 79 years, all the way back in reply #5), it was intended to be an alternative for Malcolm's soufrante de neuf ans (reply #1, which I’m afraid I can’t see).

Adding the date that IsabelH suggested (reply #11), I offer the following possible reading, with a little guesswork in brackets ...

Joseph Shaw est décédé dans la prison commune dans le district
de Montréal le trente unieme jour du mois de décembre dernier
agé de soixante dix neuf ans, en foi de quoi [nous avons signé]
ainsi que le dit comparant

Joseph Shaw died in the municipal prison in the district of Montreal on the 31st day of the month of December last, aged 79 years, in faith of which [I have signed], as has the said witness.

   I can see that now.   What I didn't notice at first was the slide bar beneath the attachment and so I wasn't even looking at the very faded and vague words to the right.   That makes a difference when you aren't aware of other words no matter what they are.  Sorry.   Malcolm.
