This is fantastic Monica thank you... Do you think we would be able to find out if they came here as a family ?

Paul, I can't really see any trace of them as a family group so far in Scotland  :-\ Lucky strike there with sister Mary Ann and finding her in Scotland. Can't see anything on deaths so far that would fit, for the others we have, in Scotland.

Your research probably still centres in Ireland at this stage, in finding out what became of parents and the two other siblings. I can't see the marriages for Mary Ann in Scotland either. Maybe finding those (in Ireland?) could help further.

That is great, Paul. I was rubbish at finding that Scottish marriage for Mary Ann!

Likely troubled early start for the children you have found  :-\

I think this is them in 1901:

Catherine Woods 52 Fort William, invernessshire
Dinah Woods 25
Isabella Woods 23
Wm Woods 22
Catherine Woods 17
Catherine Butler 10 adopted b. Glasgow
Hugh Butler 8 adopted b. Glasgow

Address: 4, The Walk, Alloa, Clackmannan

Hugh Jnr gave an Alloa address when he reported mother Mary Ann's death in 1934.

Oh WOW

Monica this is a find and a half!!!!!!!

They were adopted - A new mystery unfolds..........

Their mother didn't die until 1934 so I wonder if their fathers death prompted this - I havent found his death date yet - were they adopted so she could marry Henry Carr (I couldnt find any evidence of this wedding either) How did you find out about Henry Carr ? was his name listed on her death cert?

Hi Paul

You may already know this but, there is very little evidence of immigration/emigration between Scotland and Ireland because, at this date, no records were kept of ship passengers. This was because Ireland was part of the UK. It's frustrating!

Yes, Henry Carr (variants can include Kerr etc) showed on Mary Ann's death reg.

If Hugh died shortly after marriage and birth of Hugh Jnr, Mary Ann likely had to work to maintain herself and perhaps contribute to the care of her children?

How did you find the children's names? Was it from birth certs? Just thinking that the addresses might help you if you wanted to check for poor relief applications for the children/Mary Ann. Not sure where you are Paul. Searches for the poor relief apps have to be done at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

Yes I got them on Scotland's people. They lived in Alloa so it all ties together as I did wonder why they were there .

I live in Glasgow and have been to the mitchell before but I have never looked at the poor records. Do u have Mary Annes death cert ?

I will try searching for varients of Kerr Carr

Regarding poor relief applications, have a look at these short films from the Mitchell Library. Parts 5 & 6 cover what you can expect to find if you are fortunate to find anything. The rest of the films also give a great overview of the Mitchell holdings available to family historians www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,522720.0.html
