Badingham and Witherstead
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 12:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a bit of a mystery. One of my ancestors Daniel Pead was baptised in Badingham but in the only census which mentions a birthplace (1851) it has his birthplace as Witherstead or Wetherstead. I cannot find any mention of either spelling as a place near Baddingham.

Of course he might have lied on the census but I wondered if any of you with local knowledge of the Badingham/Laxfield area have ever come across any mention of either birth place?

many thanks
John

Where have you got details of the baptism at Badingham?   Who were his parents?

I cannot find his baptism online at all.

I have looked at the original 1851 census.

The ending of ..... stead is most unusual in the county of Suffolk. We only have Harkstead, Hawstead, Henstead, Nettlestead, Stanstead Whepstead and Wherstead - unless anyone can think of any others?

If you say Witherstead our loud with a Suffolk twist, it can sound most like 'Withrinsett' (that is, Wetheringsett-cum-Brockford to give it its full name).

However, that is not a parish close to 'Baddigham'!

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?
