Day / Barrington - Stoke St. Gregory
« on: Monday 01 August 16 21:53 BST (UK) »
My 3rd Great-Grandfather was George Gill Day (emigrated to Canada in 1855), son of James Day and Mary (daughter of Samuel Barrington) born July 1835 in Stoke St. Gregory as per birth record.  I believe he has a brother James Barrington Day who came to Canada in 1860.

Marriage certificate indicates George was living in Stoke St. Gregory with father James Day.  I have found 1841 and 1851 census records for a family in Stoke St. Gregory with father James and sons George and John with the right birth years but these records show the mother as Ellen or Elinor Day.  Have found record that Ellen Day died in 1858 and later census records show a James Day with a second wife Mary.

Is is possible that Ellen and Mary are the same person?  Would Ellen be a nickname?

Any help much appreciated.

Regards, Linda from Canada

Is there a death for Mary Day nee Barrington before 1841?

He could have married an Ellen afterwards perhaps.

Well there is a Mary Day death right district in Jun 1839 but no telling who she was.

And a James Day marriage right district in Jun 1840 where one of the possible brides is Eleanor Major.

Census had Elinor Day's birth place as Creech St. Michael - does that match with the marriage record?

Sorry I only have the marriage entry listing the names, it might not even be the right bride and groom as there are 5 different couples listed on the same page with no knowing who belongs to who.

The marriage certificate doesn't give birth place just residence at the time of the marriage.

Not much help  :-\

That's a positive find  :D  the marriage suggestion was a stab in the dark really.

Will check census to see if her age matches - yes she is 57 in 1851 born c1794.

3rd Marriage was to Mary Paul SMITH, Reg June 1861

1861 he is Lodging with Mary Smith, they must have married soon after Census which was taken 7th April.

DAY Marriages, St Gregory, Stoke St Gregory
JAMES Day to Mary BARRINGTON, 2 April 1829 (James Burrow, Elizabeth Day Witnesses)
ELIZABETH Day to James BURROWS, 29 Dec 1829
