Just re reading this thread, and following up a suggestion by JamJar, and Judith (judb) back up the thread about Alonzo Bampton. My wife copied out the death registrations for both Jane and Edward Bampton, and noted that Alonzo was not listed as living, when his father died in 1925. He is noted as living, when his mother dies in 1913. There is also a shipping reference for "A J BAMPTON" from Sydney, to Wellington NZ in 1902. Alonzo's baptismal index shows his middle initial as "J".

There is the possibility then, that "Alfred" is actually "Alonzo". There doesn't seem to be a death for this particular Alonzo BAMPTON in the indexes on Ancestry. Since he was marrying an older woman, he may have overstated his age  -  Jane was around 43 when she married "Alfred".

My thoughts also were that he may have increased his age when marrying an older woman, possibly for her benefit rather than his.

Also, and the other Alonzo who died in Sydney did go by the name of Con. Maybe they just preferred more regular sounding English names.

I can't recall, but did he have children in NZ?

So, where do you go from here?

The Alonzo who died in Sydney had parents Thomas and Jane, I think he was a cousin. We can't find any children of the marriage, and family stories don't mention any - Jane had 11 children with her first husband. I'm going to accept, for the moment, that Alonzo became Alfred.

Well yes, I can imagine that inheriting 11 children at a young age would quash the need to produce more.  ;)

Jane had no children with her when she married Alfred - the oldest were out on their own, some were with relatives (my wife's grandmother was with an aunt in Queenstown) and the youngest were in orphanages. Jane was prosecuted twice for failing to pay child support. She was an, shall we say, interesting lady.

Jane returned to Invercargill after Alfred's death, and kept house for 2 of her sons, who didn't marry. Another son was killed in France in 1917.
