Smithson Baptisms in Chatham, Kent
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 15:41 BST (UK) »
Dear all,

I am looking for more details of the two children:
James SMITHSON, baptised 26th Aug 1787
Charles SMITHSON baptised August 1788

I believe that James and Charles' parents were Charles and Lucy Smithson. Does anyone have access to the registers. In particular, I would like to know if the occupation of the 2 children's father, Charles, is mentioned and also where they were living

Thanks

Keith

Here's a link to Charles' baptism.

I can't see an entry for James  :-\

St Mary was the only church in Chatham at that time.

FreeREG has James SMITHSON's baptism as 24 Aug 1788 taken from Archdeacon's Transcripts  ???

You may have to scroll the the pages the see what you can find.

Are you trying to link to Charles SMITHSON who married Lucy OLIVIERA, 11 July 1774, Chelmsford, Essex, England ?
(Familysearch.Org)

A CHARLES Smithson had several Children Baptised Chelmsford, Essex;
Lucy 1774
Sarah 1776
Fanny 1777
Charles 1780 (may have died if right Charles who Baptised a Charles later in Kent)
William 1783
Cornelius 1790
Fathers Occp Bricklayer)
(FreeREG)
So plenty of room for Charles and James 1787/1788

CHARLES Smithson Christened 15 October 1752, Ashford, Kent
Parents JOHN/SUSAAN
(Familysearch.Org)

A JOHN/SUSANNA Baptised a lot of Children London/Kent 1750's and 1760's including Charles above and;
MILLER, 8 December 1754, St. George, Canterbury, Kent
HEWET EDWD, 12 December 1756, St. George's, Canterbury, Kent
(F/S.Org)

Now I find it a coincidence that on FreeREG we have these Baptisms St Mary, Chatham;
CHARLES, 10 Aug 1788 to HEWITT/SARAH
JAMES 24 Aug 1788 (birth 26 Aug 1787) to CHARLES/LUCY
Hewitt has a Mary Elizabeth 1783 (as Huett) and Hewitt 1780 (on Mary Elizabeths Wife is Mary, others Sarah)

There is also a Burial of Mary Smithson 1783, Daug of Miller/Ann
(FreeREG)

Aah I see from UK, Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices' Indentures, 1710-1811 Charles Smithson was a Bricklayer.
Master's Name Charles Smithson
Apprentice Name Sam Sullinge
Residence Location Orsett, Essex****
Payment Date 20 Jan 1784

Oh wow, that’s amazing info Trish. The link of to Charles SMITHSON who married Lucy OLIVIERA, 11 July 1774, Chelmsford, Essex, England  to this family in Kent is EXACTLY what I am trying to do so it’s fascinating to see Charles was (as I had suspected but couldn’t prove), the son of John and Susan.
Tell me, do you have access electronically to the actual Kent Parish Records of John and Susan’s or are you just using FreeReg to locate the births.

Hi Keith,
I only use info that is freely available on-line ie FreeREG/Familysearch etc.
I am in Australia so have not actual access to English Parish Records.

Trish :)

Although I cant find a Baptism for Lucy Oliviera an educated guess would be her Parents may be JAMES/SARAH;
BAPTISMS;
St Mary, Chelnsford, Essex
15 Oct 1734, OLIVIERA, James, cant find burial
31 May 1737, OLIVEER, James, cant find burial
02 Nov 1739, OLIVERE, John, prob buried 1743
03 Mar 1742, OLIVERE, Sarah
07 Oct 1743, OLIVERE, James* probably buied 1745
16 Aug 1745, OLIVERE, James
18 Mar 1748, OLIVERIA, Charles

All have Father as JAMES, most have Mother as SARAH, the abode is Moulsham and James Occp is Barber

Burials;
JOHN Olivera, 6 Jan 1743, Infant of Moulsham
JAMES Olivere, 11 March 1745, Infant
SARAH Oliveria, 17 Sept 1791
JAMES Oliveria, 4 Dec 1796

As Charles/Lucy Smithson name Children James/Sarah I think it may be likely her Parents were this James/Sarah.
