Courtney Island?, Co. Island?, C. Island? Magill Family
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 20:38 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

First time on this board and looking for a little help please.

Using the online RC Parish Records I believe I have traced one side of my family out of Co. Down to various locations around South East of Lough Neagh namely, Aghagallon, Derryhirk, Derryadd and Derrytrasna, all of which I can place on a map.

However, the registers record a placename which has stumped me.

It is variously recorded as Courtney Island?, Co. Island?, C. Island?

Could it be some sort of corruption or older name for Coney Island? Maybe its not an island at all!

Anyway, if anyone out there can cast any light (or alternatively put me on the right track) that would be fantastic.

Also, one of the names in the registers is recorded as Bend (BEND) Magill who married a Mary Larkin. Is Bend shorthand for Bernard, Benedict....something else?

Again, any help you can give is much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Cheers, Brian

Courtney's Island in the townland of Drumaleet
Hope this link works

Ah didn't quite work

Try this

Zoom out once.
Move the red+ to the centre top of the letter R of RC to the left of Aghagllon, zoom in twice.

Thanks Elwyn and Sinann for your responses.

Elwyn -Yes, some of the locations could indeed refer to Coalisland (I hadn't considered that!) but one of them was almost certainly Courtney or Courtneys Island.

Sinann - your link and instructions worked and there it was, absolutely brilliant.

I can't thank you both enough and appreciate your prompt and helpful responses.

Cheers,

Brian
