Hello

Also done a BNA search  for "Crossley of Cleckheaton" 1890 to 1970 ...

The Yorkshire Evening Post of 12th December 1896 ...

More Golden Weddings
Mr & Mrs George Crossley, of Cleckheaton have just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day.
...

According to the piece, he had served on the Local Board and also in business, which became a Limited company. Gives his wife's maiden name as Miss Ellen Longbottom, her father's name Mr James Longbottom (who at the time resided at Hunsworth Mills) and the Marriage was at Tong Church. The gift received from the employees of George Crossley (Limited) was a gold mounted walking stick.

It seems there is more about the company George Crossley Ltd., of Cleckheaton, in The Yorkshire Post of 25th June 1935.

But your enquirer might not even be related, to this anniversary couple of the previous century.

Mark

Hi michelew,

This seems an important thread ! being a lady looking for actual mothers burial place, I would strongly advise her too acquire Edith's death certificate* that will give a date and place to narrow down the date & the burial place of Edith. The main reason is most evening newspapers were published daily by 1955, the newspaper would have a good few pages and of full sheet size (not tabloid type). Over 3 month this would be a time consuming search at the film reader to take on the challenge of a 3 month 90 ish day blanket search of many different newspapers-thus a more exact date within say two weeks after a death date for a funeral date.

I have doubts  Edith died/buried in Cleckheaton as in 1955 it came under Spen valley GRO registration district  and Spen valley did not join Dewsbury registration district till 1974

Would your friend know if Edith's family would have been of status of wealth to afford a grave headstone ? as there maybe a memorial inscription transcribed in FHS or libraries.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

I have passed the latest info to the person concerned -  I have checked again and the death was recorded as Dewsbury district - we think the address of her death was Towngate

I'll do a bit of checking libraries around Dewsbury & Spen that hold newspapers for that area.(Cleckheaton-Heckmondwike - West of Dewsbury area)

If its Towngate Cleckheaton ? then its middleclass type houses in that area -may indicate a gravestone for Edith  :)

There are quite a few old cottages as well. Possibly middle-class now, but I doubt they would have been in 1955. (This is Town Gate, Scholes, on the western edge of Cleckheaton - I couldn't see any others.)
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
